The hair styling tools range of integrated circuits are simple, low cost integrated circuits for heating or temperature control applications, particularly well suited for hair styling tools such as hair straighteners, flat irons, hair crimpers, curling irons and hair dryers. It is designed with the aim of helping you reduce the time to market of your hair styling tools.

To date, over 20 millions of OM1654A, the first product from the hair styling tools family of integrated circuits have been sold worldwide.

Using the hair styling tools range of integrated circuits gives you the benefit of:

    All Hendon Semiconductors integrated circuits operate direct from the AC mains and so no external DC supply is required. Zero-crossing triac switching ensure low electro-magnetic interference (EMI) operation and therefore require minimal RFI filtering circuit.

    Low external component count leads to overall reduced cost in electronic circuitry and bills of materials (BOM)
  • Small PCB foot print for circuitry
    Small size packaging (SO-8) of integrated circuits and minimum external components requires only a small printed circuit board space allowing it to easily fit into handles of various hair styling tools.

The OM1654A and IES5221A are monolithic bipolar control circuits featuring zero crossing triggering of triac in applications where switching is controlled by a resistive sensor such as a negative temperature coefficient (NTC). This characteristic allows OM1654A and IES5521A to be easily used in applications that require temperature control of a heating element such as in hair styling tools.

The new IES5521A has an additional time out timer. The timeout timer is a safety feature incorporated into the integrated circuit. It refers to the operating time allowed before the IES5521A automatically switches the heating control off. The timeout timers can be controlled by the AC (50Hz or 60Hz) supply frequency for a nominal one-hour timeout.

Other timeout time than one hour can be easily specified ranging from as low as one minute to over five hours to suit your particular timing needs by simply adding a resistor and capacitor in a RC timing circuit external to the integrated circuit.
