expand your 2-wire bus without the hassle

The 2-wire bus has been at its limit or falling down for too long.

Now the solution is here!

Most designers don’t have a choice or just didn’t know. Problems can occur on a 2-wire bus when the wrong bus buffer or no bus buffer is used.

  • Existing bus buffers have large input-output offsets; this leaves little margin for external noise or a loss in signal.
  • Due to their large input-output offsets, most existing bus buffers can’t be inserted in multi-drop or back-to-back in a system.
  • Problems can occur when the number of devices on the bus or the length of the bus lines has increased the capacitance to its maximum.

The IES550x bus buffer family addresses all these problems. Expand without the hassle, plug it in and see!

A dedicated bus buffer website has been developed to assist the 2-wire bus designer by providing detailed product specifications, application notes, FAQ and "Ask the Expert"

IES550X family

The IES550x family has been released with great success.

By using analogue techniques we have designed a bus buffer series that provides superior performance over the competition with features such as I2C compliant signals and low input / output offset voltage and hot insertion logic.

For the less demanding market Hendon Semiconductors has also designed a simple low cost 2-wire bus buffer range for the standard and fast mode system.

Take a closer look at the following parts:.

IES5501 2-wire bi-directional Bus Buffer

IES5502 2-wire bi-directional Bus Buffer with Hot Insertion Logic

IES5505 IES5515 Simple 2-wire Bus Buffer

compatible 2-wire standards

  • I2CTM Bus (standard and fast mode)
  • 2-Wire Protocols
  • SMBusTM (standard and high power mode)
  • PMBusTM

  • IPMI & IPMB
  • AccessBus
  • TWI
  • DDB
what is a bus buffer

A 2-wire bus has 2 control lines to access a number of slaves on the bus.

Bus buffers are used to increase the reach of a 2-wire bus or to support an increased number of devices connected to the bus.

The buffer extends the bus load limit by buffering both the SCL (Clock) and SDA (Data) lines.

A bus buffer can be used to create bus ‘branches’ and each branch can be enabled independently and can be brought on-line in a predetermined sequence.

where is a 2-wire bus and bus buffer used

The 2-wire bus is an integral part of many systems. It is used in circuits ranging from system monitoring to networking systems together to controlling an LED on a front panel.

Some of these applications include:

  • Power Management Systems
  • Telecommunications Systems (inc. ATCATM)
  • Backplane Management / Interconnect
  • Desktop and Portable Computers (inc. RAID)
  • Compact PCIRExpress · 2-Wire Bus Switch/Multiplexing Applications

  • Automotive Accessories (up to 15V)
  • Building Automation
  • TV / Projector / Monitor interconnection
